Barrie Go Line Changes

On Saturday morning I was laying in bed and heard a train horn around 9:30 am. I was sure came from the Barrie Line. I was a bit confused at first because I know there is no weekend service as of now. I was thinking that perhaps one of the trains had some mechanical problems and therefore had to go down back to Toronto for repairs. Then about half and hour later I heard another train! Well now I was even more confused. After a while I figured they were doing crew training since CN crews are finished as of June 30.

Again on Sunday the same thing happened but there was more trains this time and all day. I think there were about 6 or 7. I happened to catch one going south while on a bike ride. That was pretty cool because I haven’t watched a southbound train before. Looked like there was only one guy in the cab though.

I really hope that the trains keep running on weekends until June so I can get some good videos since I haven’t filmed the Go train in a while.

Sorry for the lack of posts of late. I thought I would write about this event since there hasn’t been one for a while.

    You guys were right more trains this weekend,I so the Go train stop in Bradford this morning at 9:55 am.To my suprise it had 2 of the new engines pulling up the rear. #601 and #602.
    We’ll see what the rest of the weekend brings.There’s also a few M.O.W. units parked on the sidings in Bradford.Spreader and tie puller and a few others,by the looks of it must be planning some track work this week.

    Wow the new ones? thats pretty sweet. I thought that the Barrie Line didn’t get them until later this year. Anyway Maybe I’ll get the chance to see the return trip.

    Unfortunately we just heard the one train on Saturday. I was mad that I didn’t get to see the new engines. Hopefully they will be back next weekend.

    I saw a GO train going south out of Bradford at 1:10pm yesterday.Seeing them at a lot of strange times lately.Wonder if it’s more training through the week or some other reason.I heard the veggie train at about 12:30 am last night.One of these nights I’m going to try to stay up and see if I can get over there and check it out.

    I’ve been hearing them at odd times also. More than the weekends that were mentioned. I took Wednesday off work and heard the bells around 10:30am and again about an hour later.

    I caught another Go train at an off schedule time in Bradford through the week doing more crew training,when I happened to notice a string of work train hoppers on a siding.I wonder if some more major construction is in the works soon.

    There is a string of hoppers now? before there was just the one. I wonder if they are going to drop some more ballast or something. Anyway I’m still hearing the Go trains to. Caught one today with a new and old engine.

    Yeah,there’s about 8 of them near dominion foods,the carrot place and also a reefer on their siding too.the one lone hooper is still over co-op siding.I might go and shoot a bit of video over there.You don’t see that many freight cars up here to often.

    Sweet. Me and my dad will go check it out Monday morning and take some pics. It is possible the veggie train could come up on early Sunday morning. Anyways I am interested in seeing your video if you take one.

    The reefer must have left on the train last night but the hoppers are still there.The memory card on my camera was full when I got there so I will try again later when my wife shows my how to empty it lol!!.I’ll post video on youtube when I get a chance.

    I just read an infrastructure Canada report on the internet and it implies that Go Trains will again be parking at the Bradford Go Station when all day and additional peak period trains start running from Bradford to Union Station once the grade separation is completed south of highway 7 at the Snider Diamond.It’s been 12 years since there was heavy traffic on the line.Nice to see it will be returning and using the line more towards it’s full potential.I remember in the eighty’s when I use to hang out along the line with my other railway enthusiasts you could see 2 or even 3 trains meet in Newmarket.I once saw the Northlander,the Via Transcontinental and a Freight Train all meet at the Newmarket Station.Those were the days.

    Yeah it will be good when additional trains will start running. I’m not sure when it starts, hopefully soon lol. Anyway, you are lucky you got to railfan the Newmarket Sub in the 80’s, plenty of traffic. I remember seeing the Via when I was 3 or 4. Used to block Davis Drive. Never did see any freights sadly. There were lots more siding then now, one in Aurora, Newmarket as what it sounds like and some up in Barrie and Orillia. Did you guys happen to take any pictures?

    My Friend Tavis should have some,We were your age back then probably doing simular things.Riding our bikes down to the tracks hoping the engineer would honk on his way by.I also remember a CN engine on one freight pass by done up for expo 86 in Vancouver very cool paint scheme.There were 2 sidings at the magna plant at mulock and was common to see 8 auto box cars on each.
    Also a small siding on the other side of mulock going into the StairFab place which I think is still on kent st.When I was little in the 70’s I remember the mainline and 2 passing sidings on the west side of the Newmarket Station and one on the west.1 spur going to the west side of the Tannery one going in the back of the Seniors building which use to be Beaver Lumber and 1 track went over the holland river to the west and past the old film factory and up to the building that use to have the bowling alley before they tore it down.
    Aurora had two passing tracks at it’s station and barrie had a pretty big freight yard probably 6 0r 8 tracks at least.You’d alway see a few engines parked there,maybe a snow plow.M.O.W equipment and maybe 50 -100 freight cars or more.Lots of stories to tell.I will post a few as they come to mind.

    That’s amazing. I didn’t know that there were that many sidings in Newmarket. There is an old track bed south of the Tannery, another one I think is that lumber place. There is a few of those track beds around. That is cool about the Barrie yard, not much there anymore other then the Go storage yard. Anyhow looking forward to more stories. Thanks for the comments.

    They use to build steam engines in Barrie had a full engine facility,roundhouse,turntable ect.,but that was way before my time.I think they tore it up in the 50’s or 60’s and built the Allendale subdivision over it.

    I think 2 more sidings are in the works south of newmarket, and one north. 6 more power switchs :). I beleive the schedule is in the works for finish fall 09. still up in the air though.

    That’s interesting. I think I have read about some of that stuff. I’m not sure when the whole yard was gone, maybe 80’s or early 90’s. Thanks for the comment.

    They ripped up the yard sometime after they abandon the line to Washago in 1996.I think the Barrie and Collingwood railway used it until they built their new yard at the CP interchange.

    Another little interesting story for you.I can’t remember the year I’d say early late 80’s early 90’s there used to be a feed mill next to the co-op building that is still there across from the original Newmarket Station and the mill caught fire one night and burned to the ground.There was a work train with many boxcars,old passenger cars a crane ect. on the next track and they sent a deadhead engine from the macmillan yard to pull the cars out of danger.I remember seeing the cars the next day and a few of them suffered a fair amount of damage from the fire.
    There also was a large freight shed across from the station but I think it was tore down in the early 80’s.

    There use to be 15-20 trains a day on the line before 1996 We use to see the iron ore unit trains and mixed freight and local freight trains come through every day,the Northlander,the Via Transcontinental and Go Trains on the weekdays

    A fire burned that place down? interesting. Thats cool you saw that work train there. I was walking around that area last year and there is still a couple old ties in the ground. Ya there was quite a bit of traffic back then, plenty to see. It’s a shame I didn’t get to see it. Thanks for the comment.

    Big construction at the Mulock crossing this weekend.Road closed for 48 hours for work there.Might be interesting to check out what’s going on over there. Maybe that’s why all the hoppers are sitting in Bradford.I noticed huge piles of rock and ballast at the Mulock crossing when I went by there the other day.

    I’ve been informed by the contracting company for GO Transit that the Newmarket Sub from Parkdale to Bradford (for now) will be double tracked and CTC’d beginning in 2012. The Uxbridge Sub will also be receiving the same treatment by 2011. There is already a 2 mile passing siding in place at Maple which has odd looking ‘Type D’ signals. They are not yet activated, but will be when all day service starts. The points are good for 45MPH and CN L54531 is using it now nightly to run around his train rather than coming all the way up to Bradford to do the same thing. Interesting times we live in.

    Also, plans are being done for a new St. Clair West GO Station which will be built on part of the Davenport Flyover (CP North Toronto Sub / CN Newmarket Sub.)

    Our family took our first Go Train ride from Bradford to Union station a couple weekends ago when they were running the free Go Trains.
    PNR is doing a bunch of road level crossing upgrades in Bradford so there been a number of MOW vehicles on the line lately and they’re parked in Bradford at night on one of the sidings.
